May 2, 2006

SEATTLE -- Dr. Suhail Ahmad has been selected as the 2006 recipient of the James W. Haviland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nephrology. The Board of Trustees of the Northwest Kidney Centers selected Dr. Ahmad as the 2006 recipient of the Haviland Award because of his outstanding expertise and contributions in patient care, education and research as well as his personal qualities of leadership, wisdom, commitment and sincere care for patients with kidney disease.

Each recipient of the Haviland Award has added a new dimension to the spirit in which the award is given. Dr. Ahmad is joining an esteemed group of honorees: Drs. Haviland, Eschbach, Scribner, Marchioro, Hickman, Blagg, Boen, Tenckhoff, Sherrard, Fleet and Friedman.

The Haviland Award was established by the Northwest Kidney Centers in 1990 to honor physicians who have made significant contributions in renal research or the treatment of kidney disease. The award bears the name of Dr. James W. Haviland, who is considered the father of the world’s first dialysis treatment center, the Seattle Artificial Kidney Center, established in 1962, known today as the Northwest Kidney Centers.
